Counselors’ Responsibilities
The
roles of an elementary school counselor are many and
varied:

Consult
with students, parents, teachers, other school personnel

Meet
with students individually or in small groups
upon request of a parent, teacher, administrator, or
student regarding a particular concern or need “to
talk to someone”

Consult
with teachers to assist in better understanding
of children’s
developmental, academic, behavioral, and social issues
-
Conference
with parents regarding developmental issues that may or
may not be school related
-
Offer
parents suggestions of assistance from community agencies
when appropriate
-
Present
classroom activities that assist students to better understand
themselves and others
Conduct initial screenings to collect data for referrals
-
Prepare
paperwork for students referred for evaluations (speech/language
services, enrichment programming, academic support services,
occupational or physical therapy services)
-
Serve
on school based teams: Elementary Pupil Assistance Support
Service (EPASS), Instructional Support Team (IST), Bullying
Prevention, Student Council

elementary standardized testing program: Stanford
Achievement Tests (K, 2, 4) and Pennsylvania State
System of Assessment (PSSA – 3, 5)
Participate
in Individual Education Program (IEP) meetings
Coordinate,
oversee, and participate in all aspects of kindergarten
registration
Coordinate
new student registration, orientation, class placement
Gather
data and develop class lists, math groups
Identify
fourth grade students in need of homework assistance and
provide this service to them on a daily basis (Homework
Club)
Facilitate
anger management groups for referred students
Determine
Honor Roll/Merit Roll recognition
Facilitate
groups to promote rapport building with students
Maintain
accurate and up to date student records
Communication
with outside agencies relative to students’ needs
