Guidance
The elementary guidance program is a preventative and developmental program.
The goal of the guidance program is to help children realize
their potential. Physical, social, emotional, mental, and
environmental aspects are considered when assisting children
in achieving this goal. Classroom activities are conducted
by the counselors for students.
The guidance counselors offer many and varied services to students, teachers,
and parents. Students who are having difficulties academically, emotionally,
or socially are referred by the teacher or parent/guardian to the counselors
for further assistance.
In addition to tests given by the classroom teachers to
measure student progress, standardized tests are administered.
In the spring of each year, generally in April, the
Stanford Achievement Tests (SAT) are administered to
the children in grades two (2) and four (4). These
tests determine achievement levels in reading, math,
language, spelling, science, and social studies. The
tests compare a child’s achievement with that of other children across the United States.
At the time the achievement tests are given, fourth graders also receive the
Otis Lennon School Ability Test. This test determines cognitive ability and
allows school personnel to compare and contrast achievement and ability levels.
Results are used to help teachers and administrators identify learning problems
and areas of academic talent. Group results are used to assess the effectiveness
of the district’s curriculum. Pennsylvania State School Assessment Tests
(PSSA) are administered to third (3) and fifth (5) grade students.
