Message from the Director of Student Services

Welcome to the Oley Valley School District Student Services website. The Student Services Department assists District staff, students, and families in the areas of Special Education, Gifted Education, Section 504, English as a Second Language (ESL), Home School Education, and much more.

Currently, the District serves approximately 300 special education students, 126 gifted students, as well as English Language Learners. Programs to support all areas of need are included at each building level. Staffing includes 19 special education teachers and 33 special education instructional aides, three gifted teachers, three speech and language pathologists, one English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher, and two school psychologists.  The Oley Valley School District contracts occupational and physical therapy services through private providers as well. In addition, we work closely with the Berks County Intermediate Unit #14 and request services as needed in the areas of professional development, vision, and hearing support.

The Oley Valley School District is committed to providing parents of identified students with comprehensive educational evaluations and recommendations. Special education teachers are trained in administering curriculum-based assessments and measurements to assist IEP teams in creating measurable academic goals for each student. Ongoing curriculum assessments and progress monitoring provide teachers with valuable information for instruction and performance reporting to parents. Collaboratively, special and regular education teachers fulfill Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals and implement strategies. A continuum of services, including specially designed instruction (SDI) and related services (RS) are offered based on student needs.

Students qualifying for gifted services also receive a comprehensive evaluation and yearly educational plans called a Gifted Individualized Education Plan (GIEP). Students are offered a variety of experiences throughout the district. Gifted teachers are committed to enriching the District curriculum and providing students with challenging opportunities.

Students who require a 504 Plan are served under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, a civil rights law.  The primary purpose of a Section 504 plan is to give students with disabilities access to the educational environment, curriculum, and activities.

Our English as a Second Language (ESL) program supports students in mainstream classes as well as in small instructional groups. Students are assessed annually and teachers monitor progress regularly. Our ESL teacher provides support at each building on a daily basis.

Home School Education is an additional way for families to comply with compulsory school attendance laws.  In Pennsylvania, children between the ages of eight and seventeen must attend school (2019-20). Pennsylvania's law on home education (also called "homeschooling”) is called Act 169.

Please visit links provided on the Student Services web page to further assist you. For additional information, please contact the Student Services Office at (610) 987-4100, ext. 1187 or 1188.

 Sincerely,
 Mia K. Pietsch, M.Ed.
